For nineteen years David Purnell was the chief staff medical/surgical illustrator at the world's largest private cancer center -- Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. Based on his routine attendance of surgical operations, his illustrations have been published in medical journals, textbooks and used in slide presentations at medical conferences worldwide. He has worked closely with clinical, surgical and research professionals to provide graphic clarification of healthcare issues.
Prior to accepting the position at Sloan-Kettering, David received a Master of Arts Degree in Medical Illustration from The Johns Hopkins University -- School of Medicine. The graduate program included an internship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. During the time that intervened between completing his graduate program and starting at Memorial Sloan-Kettering, David was employed by The Johns Hopkins Hospital -- translating motion-based cine-radiographic films into illustrations for the Department of Diagnostic Radiology.
In October 1992, David chose to leave Memorial Sloan-Kettering in order to open his own studio in Minnesota . NEW YORK WEST is located on seven acres of beautiful woodland in the greater Minneapolis area, near Northfield .
David Purnell's Board Certification as a Certified Medical Illustrator (CMI) is maintained through Continuing Education Credits in conjunction with the Association of Medical Illustrators, of which he is a professional member.
